How to choose a final-year research topic that can actually be finished
GOSPELTRADER Research Desk · 2 October 2026 · 7 min read
Quick answer
Choose a topic you can get data for within four weeks, that answers one clear question with one main method, and that your supervisor already understands. Interest matters, but data access decides whether the project is finished on time.
Most delayed projects we see were not delayed by analysis. They were delayed in month one, when a student chose a topic that needed data nobody would release, or a method nobody on the panel could assess.
The fix is to run every candidate topic through a short filter before writing a single page of the proposal.
The four-question filter
Score each topic from one to three on each question. Anything below eight should be reshaped or dropped.
- • Data: can I lawfully collect or obtain the data within four weeks?
- • Method: is there one standard method that fits the question (regression, ANOVA, time series, survey analysis)?
- • Scope: can the question be answered for one place, one period and one population?
- • Supervision: does my supervisor work in, or comfortably assess, this area?
Narrow by place, period and population
"The impact of inflation on Nigerian households" is a book. "Food price inflation and monthly household spending in Obio/Akpor, 2022–2025" is a project. Narrowing does not make a topic less valuable; it makes the conclusion defensible.
Check the data before the literature
Students usually read first and look for data last. Reverse it. Open the NBS, CBN, World Bank or hospital records you plan to use, confirm the variables exist for your period, and only then build the literature review around what the data can answer.
Frequently asked questions
Is primary or secondary data better for a final-year project?
Secondary data is faster and usually cleaner; primary data (a questionnaire) is better when no published series answers your question. Many strong projects combine a small survey with published figures.
Can I test my topic before submitting a proposal?
Yes. Our free Research Topic Evaluator in GOSPELTRADER Labs scores feasibility, data access and method fit for registered users.
