How can you use ChatGPT to prepare for WAEC English in Nigeria?

GOSPELTRADER Research Desk · 15 October 2026 · 5 min read

Use ChatGPT to practise WAEC English essays, comprehension, summary and grammar, with prompts and checks to avoid misleading answers.

You can use ChatGPT to prepare for WAEC English by practising essay writing, comprehension, summary and grammar, then asking for explanations of your mistakes. Base your practice on the current syllabus and reliable past questions, and check AI feedback against your textbook, answer guide or teacher’s advice.

1. Build your revision plan around the WAEC syllabus

Start with the current WAEC English Language syllabus supplied by your school or obtained through official WAEC channels. ChatGPT can organise your revision, but it may give outdated or incorrect information about the examination format.

Tell it how much time you have, which areas you struggle with and which syllabus topics you need to cover. You can use these methods elsewhere in Africa, but you should follow the syllabus for your own examination.

  • • Try: “Using the syllabus topics below, create a four-week WAEC English revision plan. I have 40 minutes each weekday. Include writing, comprehension, summary, grammar and oral English revision.”
  • • Paste the relevant syllabus topics rather than asking ChatGPT to guess them.
  • • Keep a notebook of recurring mistakes and revisit them each week.

2. Practise essays before asking for feedback

Choose a writing task from a reliable past-question collection and write your own response first. Follow the task’s instructions and practise by hand so that you also develop the writing speed you will need in the examination.

Type your response into ChatGPT, or upload a clear image if your version supports it. If you use an image, check the transcription before requesting feedback: a misread word can lead to an incorrect correction.

  • • Try: “Review my WAEC English practice essay for relevance, organisation, expression and mechanical accuracy. Quote examples from my writing, explain the problems and suggest three improvements. Do not rewrite the whole essay.”
  • • For a letter, ask whether your tone, salutation and closing suit the recipient and task.
  • • Rewrite the weakest paragraph yourself, then ask whether your revision addresses the feedback.
  • • Treat any AI-generated mark as an estimate, not an official WAEC score.

3. Use passages to improve comprehension and summary

Provide the passage and its questions together. Without the passage, ChatGPT may invent details instead of helping you understand the text.

Attempt each question before asking for help. For summary practice, follow the exact instructions about the points or sentences required; shortening a passage is not always enough to answer the question.

  • • Try: “Here are a comprehension passage, its questions and my answers. Check each answer using only the passage. Identify the supporting sentence and explain anything I missed.”
  • • Try: “Check whether my summary answers this specific question. Flag repetition, unnecessary examples and copied wording. Give me hints before showing an improved version.”
  • • Compare disputed answers with a reliable answer guide or ask your English teacher.
  • • Ask ChatGPT to label any new practice passage as AI-generated rather than presenting it as an actual WAEC past question.

4. Turn grammar and oral English mistakes into short drills

Use your mistakes to request focused exercises on areas such as concord, tenses, prepositions, vocabulary and sentence structure. Short, targeted drills make it easier to see whether you understand a rule.

For oral English, ChatGPT can explain sound contrasts, syllables and stress patterns, but text alone cannot teach pronunciation reliably. Check sounds with a reputable dictionary’s British English audio and use teacher-approved practice materials.

  • • Try: “Give me 10 original WAEC-style concord questions, one at a time. Wait for my answer, explain the rule and keep a list of the rules I need to revise.”
  • • Ask why each incorrect option is wrong, rather than memorising the correct letter.
  • • Try: “Explain the difference between word stress and sentence stress, then give me five practice questions. Do not describe them as official WAEC questions.”

5. Check your progress without becoming dependent on AI

Complete a timed practice session regularly without ChatGPT, notes or hints. Use your current examination guidance to set the timing, then review your work afterwards.

You do not need a paid AI subscription to start with basic text practice, although free access and usage limits can change. To conserve mobile data, send short typed extracts instead of uploading large files, and save useful feedback for offline revision.

  • • Track specific improvements, such as fewer tense errors or more relevant summary points, rather than relying only on AI scores.
  • • Ask your teacher to review an occasional essay and compare their feedback with ChatGPT’s suggestions.
  • • Leave your examination number, school records and other personal details out of uploads.
  • • Use AI for preparation, not to obtain answers during an examination or bypass assessment rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT mark your WAEC English essay accurately? ChatGPT can flag grammar problems, weak organisation and unclear ideas, but it can miss errors or apply marking criteria inconsistently. Use its comments to revise your work and ask your teacher for a more dependable assessment.

Can ChatGPT predict WAEC English questions? You should not rely on ChatGPT to predict examination questions. It can create practice tasks based on syllabus topics, but those tasks are not confirmed questions or evidence of what will appear.

Should you memorise essays written by ChatGPT for WAEC? Memorising complete AI-written essays can leave you answering the wrong task if the examination question differs. Practise planning, paragraph development and appropriate language so that you can write your own response to the question you receive.
