Learn how to use ChatGPT to write a tailored cover letter for jobs in Nigeria, protect your personal details and avoid invented experience.
You can use ChatGPT to draft a cover letter by giving it the job advert, relevant facts from your CV and clear instructions not to invent experience. Check every claim, rewrite anything that does not sound like you and follow the employer’s application requirements before sending it.
1. Gather the job advert and your relevant experience
A useful AI-generated cover letter starts with evidence, not a request to ‘write something professional’. Save the full job advert and select the parts of your experience that match the role.
For jobs in Nigeria, your evidence might come from paid work, an internship, NYSC duties, volunteering, a school project or running a small business. Label each experience accurately rather than presenting every activity as formal employment.
- • Include the exact job title and employer’s name.
- • Copy the advertised responsibilities, essential skills and application instructions.
- • List two or three relevant examples of work you actually completed.
- • Include measurable results only if you can support them.
- • Check whether the employer requests a cover letter, an application email or answers to specific questions.
2. Remove personal and confidential information
You do not need to upload your complete CV to get a useful draft. Paste only the relevant education, skills and experience, using placeholders for your name and contact details.
Avoid sharing your NIN, BVN, passport number, home address, referees’ contact details or confidential documents from a previous employer. Review the AI service’s current privacy and data controls before sharing information; settings are not a substitute for removing sensitive details.
- • Use placeholders such as [Your name], [Email] and [Phone number].
- • Remove customer names and private financial information from work examples.
- • Add your contact details yourself after you finish editing the letter.
3. Give ChatGPT a precise cover letter prompt
Use a prompt that defines the role, evidence, length and tone. If the employer gives a word limit, use that instead of the suggested length below.
Copy and adapt this prompt: ‘Help me draft a cover letter for the [job title] role at [employer] in Nigeria. Use plain British English and a professional, natural tone. Keep it between 250 and 350 words. Match my genuine experience to the most important requirements in the advert. Do not invent qualifications, skills, responsibilities, achievements or knowledge about the employer. If an essential fact is missing, ask me before drafting. Avoid clichés and do not repeat my entire CV. Job advert: [paste advert]. My relevant experience: [paste verified facts]. Application instructions: [paste instructions].’
If you have little work experience, add: ‘Use my projects, volunteering or NYSC experience where relevant, but identify them accurately. Do not describe me as an experienced professional.’
- • Ask for a first draft rather than treating the initial response as ready to send.
- • If the wording feels stiff, ask for shorter sentences and fewer adjectives.
- • If the letter is generic, ask ChatGPT to connect each main claim to a specific example you supplied.
4. Check the draft for accuracy and make it sound like you
Compare the draft line by line with your CV and the job advert. ChatGPT can introduce unsupported details, including software skills, performance figures or claims about the employer.
Replace broad statements with truthful examples. Instead of ‘I am an exceptional administrator’, you might write ‘During my NYSC placement, I maintained attendance records and prepared weekly activity summaries’—but only if you actually did those tasks.
Use relevant terms from the advert naturally, such as ‘inventory management’ or ‘customer support’, when they accurately describe your experience. Repeating keywords or using AI does not guarantee that you will pass an applicant tracking system or get an interview.
- • Verify the employer’s name, job title and any named recipient.
- • Check dates, qualifications, NYSC status and availability against your actual circumstances.
- • Remove invented numbers, exaggerated responsibilities and unsupported praise.
- • Read the letter aloud and rewrite phrases you would not normally use.
- • Make sure you could explain every example if an interviewer asked about it.
5. Format and submit the letter as instructed
Keep the final letter focused, usually within one page unless the employer specifies otherwise. Start with the role you are applying for, explain your strongest relevant evidence and close with a brief expression of interest in an interview.
If you know the recipient’s name, use it. Otherwise, ‘Dear Hiring Manager’ is a reasonable option. There is no need to invent a contact person or add a full postal address unless it is requested or appropriate to the format.
Follow the advert’s instructions for the email subject, file type and submission method. If the letter belongs in the email body, paste the final text there; if an attachment is required, use the requested format. Open any exported file to check its layout before submitting.
If the employer prohibits AI-generated application content, write the letter yourself and follow its rules. Never claim you completed an application unaided if that is not true.
- • Use a clear filename such as Firstname-Surname-Cover-Letter.pdf when PDF is accepted.
- • Remove every placeholder before sending.
- • Check that the cover letter and CV describe the same experience consistently.
- • Save the final version and the job advert so you can review them before an interview.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use the free version of ChatGPT to write a cover letter? Yes. You can draft and revise a cover letter through text prompts without paying for a subscription, subject to the service’s current availability and usage limits. Paste the relevant text if file uploads are unavailable.
Should you tell a Nigerian employer that you used ChatGPT? Check the employer’s application rules. If it asks you to disclose AI assistance, disclose it honestly; if it prohibits that assistance, follow the restriction. Where there is no stated policy, you should still take responsibility for every claim and avoid falsely declaring that you worked without assistance.
Can you reuse one ChatGPT cover letter for every job? You can reuse a basic structure, but tailor the letter to each vacancy. Update the employer, role and examples, and explain how your actual experience meets that advert’s requirements. Simply changing the company name usually leaves you with a generic application.
