How can you use ChatGPT to write a CV for jobs in Nigeria?
GOSPELTRADER Research Desk · 4 October 2026 · 4 min read
Use ChatGPT to tailor your CV for Nigerian jobs, protect your personal details and avoid invented experience or formatting mistakes.
You can use ChatGPT to organise your experience, improve your CV wording and tailor it to a Nigerian job advert. Give it only accurate information, remove sensitive personal details before uploading anything, and check every claim before you submit the finished CV.
1. Prepare your facts before asking ChatGPT
Start with notes about your education, work history, skills and relevant achievements. If you are applying for your first job, include internships, volunteering, school projects or responsibilities in a family business.
For roles where it matters, state your National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) status accurately. Do not let ChatGPT assume you have completed service or hold an exemption.
- • List your actual job titles, organisations and dates.
- • Include qualifications and certifications you have earned; clearly label anything still in progress.
- • Describe tasks you performed and results you can explain in an interview.
- • Remove your NIN, BVN, bank details, signature and referees’ contact details. Use placeholders for your own phone number and email.
2. Ask for a draft that does not invent experience
Paste your notes into ChatGPT with clear instructions about accuracy, length and tone. You can do this with the free version, subject to its current usage limits.
Try this prompt: “Write a CV for an entry-level customer service role in Nigeria using only the facts below. Use plain British English and a simple, single-column layout. Include a short professional summary, relevant skills, experience and education. Do not invent qualifications, employers, dates, software skills or results. Ask questions where information is missing. Here are my notes: [paste notes].”
- • Aim for one or two pages if you are early in your career, unless the employer requests something different.
- • Ask for direct language rather than phrases such as “visionary professional” or “exceptional team player”.
- • Keep the draft in an editable document so you can correct it yourself.
3. Tailor your CV to one job advert
Copy the job description into the same conversation and ask ChatGPT to compare it with your draft. Your goal is to make relevant experience easier to find, not to pretend you meet every requirement.
Use this prompt: “Compare my CV with this job advert. Identify requirements my experience supports and suggest clearer wording. List any gaps separately. Do not add skills or experience I have not provided: [paste advert].”
- • Use the advert’s terminology where it accurately describes your experience.
- • Move your most relevant responsibilities and projects higher within each section.
- • Do not add Excel, SQL, accounting software or other tools merely because the advert mentions them.
- • Follow any employer instructions about CV length, supporting documents and application format.
4. Improve your bullet points without making up numbers
Ask ChatGPT to turn vague duties into specific descriptions of what you did. For example, if your notes say you answered customer messages and recorded orders, you could write: “Answered customer enquiries on WhatsApp and recorded orders for follow-up.”
Only include figures when you can support them. If you do not know how many customers you served or whether sales increased, describe your responsibilities without inventing percentages.
- • Use this prompt: “Rewrite these duties as concise CV bullet points. Preserve the facts and do not invent numbers or outcomes: [paste duties].”
- • Check that each bullet describes your contribution rather than your whole team’s work.
- • Remove any statement you could not confidently explain during an interview.
5. Check formatting and accuracy before applying
Use standard headings such as Work Experience, Education and Skills. A simple layout without text boxes, decorative graphics or complicated tables can make your CV easier for recruiters and applicant tracking systems (ATS) to read, although no format guarantees selection.
Save your CV in the file type requested by the employer. If you submit a PDF, export it from your document editor rather than sending a scanned image, and check that you can select and copy the text.
- • Verify names, dates, qualifications and NYSC status against your records.
- • Add your correct contact details locally after finishing the AI-assisted draft.
- • Check spelling, page breaks and whether the document opens properly.
- • Use a clear filename, such as Firstname-Surname-CV.pdf.
- • Review the AI service’s current privacy settings before sharing documents; do not assume your conversation is confidential.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use the free version of ChatGPT to write a CV? Yes. You can paste your experience and a job advert into the free version and ask for a draft or suggested edits, subject to current usage limits. You do not need a paid subscription for basic CV writing.
Should you include a photograph on your CV in Nigeria? For most roles, you can leave out your photograph unless the employer specifically requests one. Prioritise relevant experience, qualifications and contact details, and check that any request for additional personal information comes from a legitimate employer.
Can ChatGPT guarantee that your CV will pass an ATS? No. Employers use different systems and screening criteria. You can improve readability with a simple layout and truthful, relevant wording, but ChatGPT cannot guarantee that your CV will be shortlisted.
