How can Nigerian students scan handwritten notes into a PDF on their phone?

GOSPELTRADER Research Desk · 7 October 2026 · 5 min read

Turn handwritten lecture notes into a PDF on Android or iPhone, reduce file size and submit clear scans without paying for a scanner app.

You can scan handwritten lecture notes into a PDF using Google Drive on Android or the built-in Notes app on iPhone. Capture each page, check the order and save the pages as one document; you do not need a paid scanner app.

1. Prepare your notes for a clear scan

A document scan crops and straightens your pages so they are easier to read than ordinary photographs. For coursework submissions, first check whether your lecturer requires a PDF, a particular filename or a maximum file size.

  • • Arrange your pages in the correct order before scanning.
  • • Place each page flat on a plain surface that contrasts with the paper.
  • • Use daylight or even lighting, avoiding shadows from your hand or phone.
  • • Wipe your camera lens and hold your phone directly above the page.
  • • Keep page numbers, diagrams and writing near the margins inside the frame.

2. Scan your notes into a PDF on Android

Google Drive includes a document scanner on Android. Open the app and look for the camera or Scan option; depending on your app version, you may find it under the + button.

Google Drive saves your finished scan to your Drive account. Allow for mobile data or use Wi-Fi when uploading, especially if your document contains many pages.

  • • Open Google Drive and select Scan.
  • • Point your camera at the first page and capture it automatically or manually.
  • • Adjust the crop so that no handwriting is cut off, then rotate or retake the image if needed.
  • • Use the add-page control to capture the remaining pages in the same scan.
  • • Review the pages, select PDF as the file format if prompted, name the document and save it to your chosen folder.
  • • Check that the upload has completed before sending a Drive link or relying on the cloud copy.

3. Scan your notes into a PDF on iPhone

You can use Apple Notes without installing another scanner app. Open a new or existing note, tap the attachment or camera control and choose Scan Documents. The exact control depends on your iOS version.

After scanning, share the scanned document itself rather than a collaboration link to the whole note. You can save the PDF to Files or attach it to a message or email.

  • • Position the first page in view and let Notes capture it, or press the shutter button.
  • • Adjust the corners and choose Keep Scan when capturing manually.
  • • Continue scanning until you have captured every page.
  • • Tap Save, then open the scanned document to inspect it.
  • • Use Share and select Save to Files to keep a PDF copy. Choose an On My iPhone location if you want local storage rather than iCloud Drive.

4. Make the PDF readable and small enough to submit

Open the saved PDF and zoom in on your smallest handwriting. Check equations, decimal points, labels and faint pencil marks carefully: a page can look fine as a thumbnail but become unreadable when inspected.

If your PDF exceeds your school's upload limit, remove duplicate pages and crop unnecessary background. Where your scanner offers quality settings, choose a lower setting only if the text remains clear. Greyscale may help reduce file size, but retain colour when it carries meaning in diagrams or annotations.

Avoid uploading private coursework or personal documents to unfamiliar PDF compression websites. If you need a compression tool, prefer one that processes files on your device and check its permissions.

  • • Confirm that every page is present, upright and in the right order.
  • • Use a clear filename, such as CSC201-Assignment-YourName.pdf, unless your lecturer specifies another format.
  • • Check the saved file size against the submission portal's limit.
  • • After uploading, preview the submitted file where possible and keep your submission confirmation.

5. Understand scanning, handwriting recognition and privacy

Scanning creates a PDF containing images of your notes; it does not automatically turn your handwriting into editable text. Optical character recognition, or OCR, may recognise some handwriting, but accuracy varies with your writing style, language and page layout.

If you use OCR or an AI tool to extract text, compare the output with the original notes. Pay particular attention to technical terms, formulae and references rather than treating the converted text as an exact copy.

Keep your original scan until your work has been accepted. When sharing through Google Drive, use restricted access for named recipients where practical and check that your lecturer can open the file. Do not publicly share classmates' personal details or restricted course material.

Frequently asked questions

Can you scan lecture notes into a PDF without internet? Yes, if your scanning app supports local saving. On iPhone, you can scan with Notes and save the PDF to an On My iPhone location in Files. On Android, offline options depend on your phone and scanner app; Google Drive needs internet to upload the finished file to your account.

Can you combine several handwritten pages into one PDF? Yes. Keep adding pages within the same scanning session before saving. Both Google Drive's scanner and Apple Notes support multi-page scans, so you can submit one PDF rather than separate photographs.

Will scanning turn your handwriting into editable Word text? Not by itself. You need a handwriting-recognition or OCR tool to extract text, and you should correct the result before putting it into Word. Keep the scanned PDF as your reference, particularly for equations, tables and diagrams.
